France is the most-visited country in the world well ahead of second place Spain and third place the USA - this excluding people just crossing France on the way to other countries. France is the largest country in the European Union and the second largest country in Europe in terms of land area. Given its size its not surprising that France has some of just about anything a tourist could want, from the culture of Paris, to wonderful beaches and seaside resorts, ski resorts, beautiful rural regions and much history. It is also a focus for religious pilgrims; there are millions who visit Lourdes each year.
The north of France has the flatlands around the Channel - not unlike the landscapes of Belgium and the Netherlands. To the west are the Atlantic coast and Normandy and Brittany, and to the east the major wine areas, Alsace, Lorraine and Burgundy. In the quiet centre of France is the Loire Valley with wonderful castles and stately towns.
The French Alps are popular for skiing in winter, and the famous south of France with its warm climate, good food, roman history and the Riviera resorts draws in a lot of visitors. The Dordogne in the southwest, and the Languedoc in the south are well worth a visit.
